Description
The finesse of an elegant and well-balanced Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits
The estate
Historically established since 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the heart of Côte de Nuits, the Faiveley family is at the head of one of the most beautiful estates in Burgundy. Domaine Faiveley produces very fine Burgundy wines through combining the respect for tradition with modernity. With a wide range of wines which showcase great accuracy and precision, Domaine Faiveley is a vital reference from Burgundy.
The vineyard
The Domaine Faiveley vineyard covers more than 120 hectares of vines that spread over the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. This exceptional winegrowing heritage includes superb parcels of Grands and Premiers Crus which capture the very essence of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals. The vines are cultivated using sustainable viticultural methods to preserve the diversity of the flora and fauna.
The wine
The most northerly Grand Cru of Gevrey-Chambertin, "Les Mazis" is one of the most emblematic references of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru appellation has an eastern exposure and covers 9.10 hectares of vines. Domaine Faiveley owns 1.56 hectares of vines planted in 1937, 1959 and 1974 in this very famous climate, which produce rich and powerful wines.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes undergo a short pre-fermentation maceration before being vinified in wooden truncated-cone vats. The vatting period lasts 3 weeks and the grapes are then pressed vertically to preserve the quality and purity of the juice. The wines are aged for 16 to 18 months with a variable proportion of new oak depending on the vintage (on average 2/3 new oak), favouring fine grapes and moderate toasting.
