Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Riesling Vinothekfüllung Smaragd 2025 from Weingut Emmerich Knoll
Tasting
Nose
The nose reveals ripe stone fruit, led by apricot and vineyard peach, together with notes of candied citrus such as orange or mandarin zest. Hints of honey round out the bouquet, which is underpinned by the minerality characteristic of the Wachau's primary rock terroirs.
Palate
On the palate, this Riesling is structured, powerful and concentrated. The richness of candied fruit and quince is balanced by vibrant acidity, leading to a saline, mineral and persistent finish, typical of the Vinothekfüllung Smaragd style.
Food and wine pairings
This cuvée pairs beautifully with delicate steamed fish, shellfish, poultry and asparagus. It also works very well with white meats in creamy sauces, such as veal cordon bleu.
Serving and cellaring
This wine is ideally served between 8 and 12°C, a temperature that fully reveals the aromatic complexity of this cuvée, which sits at the top of the estate's range.
A dry and powerful Riesling, the pinnacle of the Weingut Emmerich Knoll range in the Wachau
The estate
The Knoll family has been growing vines in Unterloiben, in the Wachau, since the 19th century. Located in Lower Austria, in the heart of the Danube valley, the estate is now run by Emmerich Knoll and his sons, who perpetuate a classic style based on ageing in large wooden casks. Regarded as one of the most respected addresses in the region, the estate cultivates a vineyard of around 20 hectares, planted almost exclusively with white grape varieties.
The vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come from several of the finest slopes of the Wachau, set on steep, terraced primary rock hillsides. These poor, freely draining soils, worked mainly by hand, encourage low yields and a pronounced mineral expression, the hallmark of the region's great dry Rieslings.
Winemaking and maturation
This cuvée comes from a particularly rigorous selection of very ripe, hand-harvested grapes, often picked later than the rest of the harvest. Depending on the vintage, a small proportion of berries may be affected by noble rot. Fermentation follows the estate's traditional style, before maturation mainly in large wooden casks, in order to preserve the aromatic purity and mineral tension of this Austrian wine.
Grape variety
This wine is made from 100% Riesling.
