Tasting
Palate
On the palate, this wine stands out for its ample, dense texture, carried by a freshness and tension that give it the vertical structure characteristic of the Smaragd style. The concentration of grapes selected from the estate's finest crus brings depth and length, resulting in a dry, powerful and distinguished wine.
Serving and cellaring
The Grüner Veltliner Vinothekfüllung Smaragd 2025 belongs to the tradition of Smaragd-style wines from Weingut Emmerich Knoll, crafted for long ageing and capable of evolving favourably for many years in the cellar.
An Austrian Grüner Veltliner with a distinctive Smaragd style
The estate
Weingut Emmerich Knoll has been cultivating vines in Unterloiben, in the Wachau, in Lower Austria, since 1825. Handed down from generation to generation within the Knoll family, the estate is now run by Emmerich H. Knoll, together with his sons August and Emmerich junior. Recognisable by its label depicting Saint Urban, the estate extends over approximately 19.5 hectares devoted mainly to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and is distinguished by its commitment to the Vinea Wachau association, of which Emmerich H. Knoll has been president since 2012.
The vineyard
The Grüner Veltliner Vinothekfüllung Smaragd 2025 comes from a selection of the estate's best plots, located around Unterloiben, in the heart of the Wachau, on the terraces overlooking the Danube. The soils combine gneiss, granite and loess deposits, providing Grüner Veltliner with an ideal terrain for concentration and power. This selection draws in particular on the renowned crus of Schütt, Loibenberg, Kellerberg, Pfaffenberg and Kreutles, which form the heart of the estate's vineyard, now spread over approximately 19.5 hectares, more than 90% of which is devoted to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes used for the Grüner Veltliner Vinothekfüllung Smaragd 2025 are hand-harvested at a high level of ripeness, but without botrytis development, in order to preserve the aromatic purity of the fruit. Fermentation relies on the estate's indigenous yeasts, following a deliberately traditional approach. The wine is then aged in large wooden foudres, which promote a slow, harmonious evolution without pronounced oak influence.
Grape variety
This wine is made from 100% Grüner Veltliner, Austria's emblematic grape variety and a speciality of Weingut Emmerich Knoll across the terroirs of the Wachau.
