Description
A Pessac-Léognan red wine by Domaine de Chevalier: the perfect marriage between freshness and complexity
The producer
Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the beautiful Domaine de Chevalier is among the finest Bordeaux Crus Classés. This iconic estate is located in heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the south of Bordeaux, and is surrounded by a green haven.
The vineyard
Domaine de Chevalier watches over a rare 45-hectare vineyard comprising vines dedicated to the production of red wine. The vineyard lies on a gravelly soil with a clay and gravel subsoil.
The vintage
The 2001 vintage was marked by a particularly humid winter. The excellent weather conditions during the summer and early autumn enabled the grapes to reach optimum maturity. The grapes harvested produced a wine that is alluringly fresh and richly aromatic.
The vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates and are rigorously sorted in the vineyard, then in the cellar before and after destemming. Vinification is carried out in a plot-by-plot manner in two vats (one of which is a concrete tulip-shaped tank). The wine is aged in barrels (1/3 of which are new oak) for 16 to 18 months, with regular stirring of the lees during the first 4 months.
The blend
Domaine de Chevalier 2001 comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (5%).
The tasting
Colour
Brilliant, with a deep ruby-purple colour.
Nose
Intense and complex, the nose combines fruity (red and black fruits) and spicy (pepper) fragrances with notes of tobacco, leather and liquorice. When aired, mineral and minty notes are revealed, as well as truffle and wet gravelly soil notes.
Palate
A brilliant combination of elegance and power, the palate reveals a silky and refined tannic structure. Fleshy and with a good length, this red wine reveals its finesse and its fruity expression during the tasting experience. The richness and balance are sustained by an acidity that provides both vivacity and freshness.
Storage
This Domaine de Chevalier 2001 can be kept in the cellar until 2025 in order to reveal its full aromatic range.
