Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Champin le Seigneur 2024 by Jean-Michel Gérin
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals a deep red colour with purplish highlights, the hallmark of a Côte-Rôtie Syrah vinified with sustained extraction.
Nose
The nose is powerful, with notes of spice alongside ripe dark fruit such as blackberry and black cherry. Floral touches of violet and hints of garrigue complete the aromatic palette.
Palate
The palate is structured and elegant, carried by firm yet silky tannins. The wine is both very fruity and round, with beautiful concentration and a fine oak influence that is perfectly integrated into the wine's texture.
Food and Wine Pairings
Champin le Seigneur pairs ideally with dishes of character such as duck with vine peaches, hare à la royale or leg of lamb à la provençale. It also pairs very well with roasted or grilled red meats, game, and mature cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
We recommend serving Champin le Seigneur 2024 at around 16 °C and decanting it while young to fully reveal its aromatic complexity. This wine can be kept until approximately 2035.
A Spicy, Structured Côte-Rôtie from Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin
The Estate
Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin was founded in 1983 in Ampuis, in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, in the northern Rhône Valley. The Gérin family, established in this village for six generations, has gradually built up a vineyard of around 20 hectares spread across Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph. Today, the estate is run by Michaël and Alexis Gérin, sons of the founder Jean-Michel Gérin, who initiated the conversion to organic farming, certified since the 2023 vintage.
The Vineyard
The Champin le Seigneur cuvée comes from 11 plots located in the northern part of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, with a south-easterly exposure. The vines, around 30 years old, are farmed organically, without chemical fertilisers or weedkillers, and worked entirely by hand, as dictated by the steep slopes of the hillsides.
Vinification and Ageing
Champin le Seigneur 2024 is vinified using a maceration of around three weeks in stainless steel tanks, favouring a precise extraction of tannins and aromas. The wine is then aged for 22 months in oak barrels, around 30% of which are new, a proportion designed to support the wine's power without masking its fruit.
Grape Varieties
The blend is based on Syrah, complemented by a touch of Viognier planted together with it in the plots.
