Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Clos d'Ora 2022 Gérard Bertrand
Tasting
Colour
The colour unveils itself in a deep, brilliant ruby hue.
Nose
The nose opens with intense aromas of dark fruit, accompanied by spicy and floral notes.
Palate
The palate is both powerful and elegant, carried by supple, subtle tannins. The breadth and length on the palate are remarkable, offering a precise texture and a distinctly present freshness.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine is an ideal match for aged red meats, such as a full-flavoured beef, as well as game. It also pairs very well with mature hard cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
We recommend decanting Clos d'Ora 2022 about an hour before serving, in order to fully reveal its aromatic palette and soften its tannic structure.
A Minervois La Livinière Wine Born of a Geological Fault Between Limestone, Sandstone and Marl
The Estate
Gérard Bertrand is a winemaker from the Languedoc, heir to a lineage of Corbières grape growers, who took over the family estate of Villemajou in 1987 before founding the wine company that bears his name. Today at the head of a group of estates farmed biodynamically and, for the most part, Demeter-certified, he has established himself as a leading figure of the Languedoc, helping to gain recognition for its wines in many countries around the world.
The Vineyard
Clos d'Ora comes from a nine-hectare walled vineyard enclosed by dry-stone walls, located in the commune of La Livinière in Minervois La Livinière, at an altitude of around 220 metres. The vineyard sits on a geological fault where Bartonian and Lutetian terroirs meet, composed of limestone, sandstone and marl. The Syrah and Carignan vines are particularly old, while the Grenache and Mourvèdre were planted in 2000. The entire vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with the soil worked by horse and mule.
Winemaking and Ageing
The 2022 Clos d'Ora harvest is carried out by hand, with prior leaf removal to help ensure the healthy condition of the grapes. Maceration takes place in concrete tanks, with each plot and each grape variety vinified separately, using a gentle approach designed to preserve the finesse of the tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for around 12 months, before being blended after the spring equinox.
Grape Varieties
Clos d'Ora 2022 is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan.
