The estate

Founded in 2008 in California by Alex Krause and John Locke, Birichino has built a distinctive identity by showcasing historic old-vine vineyards located in the cool areas of the Central Coast, influenced by the proximity of the ocean. The two co-founders, who still lead the estate today, have accumulated several decades of experience in both California and Europe. Birichino stands out for its low-intervention winemaking, which respects the authenticity of each terroir it works with.

The vineyard

The Zinfandel that gives rise to this St Georges Vineyard Zinfandel Old Vine comes from an old-vine plot located in the Central Coast appellation, where the ocean influence brings cool nights that favour full phenolic ripeness without overripeness. These vines are tended with particular care, following a traditional, minimally interventionist approach to viticulture.

Winemaking and ageing

True to its general philosophy of low-intervention winemaking, Birichino crafts this cuvée using fermentations carried out by native yeasts and neutral vessels, in order to best preserve the expression of the fruit and the terroir. Technical interventions, such as rackings or finings, are deliberately kept to a minimum to preserve all the vibrancy of the raw material.
