Description
The aromatic richness and finesse of a great Tuscan wine
The estate
The Frescobaldis, an important Florentine family devoted to the production of Tuscan wines, have been established in this historic land for over 1000 years. Their influence grew considerably during the period of the Republic of Florence, when the city's banking industry developed. In particular, the family was involved in the great municipal works of art of the time, such as the Santa Trinita Bridge and the Santo Spirito Basilica. Located in the Montalcino area, southwest of the medieval city, the Frescobaldi-Tenuta Luce Della Vite estate produces some of the finest wines of Tuscany and the greatest Italian wines.
The vineyard
Frescobaldi - Tenuta Luce della Vite stretches across 192 hectares, of which 55 are planted with vines, with an average capacity of 6,100 plants per hectare. With an altitude between 350 and 420 metres inclusive above sea level, the estate has one of the highest vineyards in Tuscany.
The soils, rich in pebbles and sediments but poor in organic matter, combined with a good exposure on the southern slope, provide the ideal conditions for producing great Sangiovese with slow ripening of the grapes. The lower part of the vineyard, on the clay soils, is where the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted.
The vintage
A particularly mild and dry winter led to an early budding of the vines from mid-March. The warm and humid conditions of spring ensured rapid and uniform flowering, followed by excellent fruit set. The high rainfall recorded at the beginning of June was offset by a hot and relatively dry summer. The rainy spells at the end of August were beneficial for the vineyard, boosting ripening and reducing temperatures. The temperature variations between day and night as the harvest approached were ideal for refining the ripening process. The grapes harvested in September were healthy and had great aromatic potential.
